Gangs was a hip-hop and R&B musical I co-directed and choreographed in Los Angeles. My challenge was to integrate musical theater staging with a hip-hop vocabulary to create a fresh, dynamic, contemporary musical. Co-director Randy Weiner and I worked to create an ensemble from the talented assemblage of freestyle rappers, raw vocal talent and hip-hop dance artists. Humor and exuberant energy defined the production.
